For Sale, RHD 101GS 24V 96100116A converted to Camper.
My much travelled 101 is for sale. I've had it since 1992, and driven it over 100k miles, including a four week traverse of the island of Iceland, where (apart form changing a wheel bearing) it behaved faultlessly, and was surprisingly agile.
I have made the hard body, from welded 38mm x 38mm x 3mm aluminium box section, and 1.6mm aluminium sheet fixed with 3M VHB tape. The inside is insulated with Cellotex rigid fire-retardant closed cell foam insulation, and marine ply lining. Interior roll frame fitted just aft of the B pillars, made from 50mm dia 5mm wall CDS tubing, with a single brace on the drivers side, bolted through to the chassis, replacing the standard roll frame.
Mechanical:
Engine is Perkins Phaser 4-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel, fitted new in 1994. It has done only 100k miles, and starts on the first turn every time. Lifetime mean fuel consumption is 21mpg, the lowest I've ever had it was 18mpg when crossing central Iceland: 200km of low ratio driving. The best is about 25mpg, doing about 45mph. Realistic range on the standard size stainless steel fuel tank is 500 miles. Another 100 miles is available using the rear-mounted jerry can.
Axles are 3.54:1 ratio, to compensate for the 2600rpm governor limit of the engine.
Propshafts are specials from GKN Driveline using HS180 UJs, to cope with the higher torque from the engine, compared with the petrol V8.
Gearbox(es) are standard.
In the position one would fit an overdrive, there is a PTO outlet, driving an air compressor. There is a 10l reservoir, and a PCL outlet for tools or tyre inflation.
The front axle has air helper springs, controlled from the cab.
Stainless 76mm diameter exhaust.
"TyrePal" tyre pressure monitor fitted.
Spare wheel mounted on a pole that is raised into position on the back of the vehicle by a hand winch. This is then bolted and padlocked into position for driving.
All pioneer tools fitted, with new canvas straps. There is no starter handle: a) because there is no starter dog on the engine, and b) you wouldn't be able to turn it over even if there was one!
Front doors and tops have galvanised frames, and twin sliding lights in the windows.
Camper:
Bed is raised by an electric winch into the over-cab roof space when not in use. The bedding is stored in the "luton" space above the windscreen.
Propane cooker with two burners and a grill. Gas cylinders (one in use and one spare) externally mounted under the near-side floor.
Two 110AH 12V batteries wired in series for "domestic" usage, with 4 off 20W solar panels on the roof to keep them topped up.
Stainless steel sink with electrically pumped hot and cold water, and filtered cold drinking water. This comes from two 35l tanks mounted above the rear wheel arches.
Ebespacher D4L diesel fuel burning heater fitted, heating the engine coolant, which pre-heats the engine, supplies heat to the heater matrices (second heater matrix in the camper body) and heats water in the 35l hot water tank. The control panel for this heater is placed next to the radio above the windscreen so the it can be operated from the driving seat or the bed (so you can get up to a warm vehicle when camping in frosty weather!)
Ample cupboard space for food, clothing, rucksacks etc, with lightweight aluminium doors.
LED lighting in the cabin.
Side access door, with a clip-on step ladder (utilising the drop side hinges)
Rear-mounting 2-bike rack, to take normal gents bikes with a horizontal top tube, with number plate and lighting board, that plugs into the 12-pin NATO light socket.
The vehicle had recently had a re-paint, with the chassis bead-blasted and repainted with commercial vehicle chassis black, the body in two-pack semi-gloss NATO green.
Located in northern Somerset.
Offers in the region of £12500 PM me for more details Roger.
