Saw this on eBay, considered grabbing it as a spare, as this particular side seems few and far between. But not sure if I want to spend the cash on it right now.

Many years ago I bought a pair of front half-shafts plus CV joints from a well known distributor for fifteen quid each. They are still wrapped securely in greased cloth and polythene under the bookcase in the living room (well, they have to be kept dry!) just in case.

Lol many years ago I bought an entire front axle on the basis I had never seen one for sale before and I thought it would be good to have one ready for when the swivel rust out.
Over the next 2 weeks that same e bay seller listed another 9 axles. the final one sold for £550 less than I had paid for the first one to sell

needless to say mine is now sitting wrapped in cotton wool in a heated room as it is too valuable to even think about fitting it (yet!)

Hmmm. Maybe then it would be a halfway decent idea to grab it then.

I think quite a few of us have spare axles!
Despite the fact that they're indestructable

ok to modify my remark...
one Dutchman has allegedly broken a CV joint,
and one English woman (naming no names :D ) broke a CV joint, and a steering box in one go!

Was that from lack of maintenance? Cv joints fail, but usually give notice by knocking, & by lack of lubrication they quickly wear out. A good reason to regularly check swivel pin levels. 8)

Plenty of Lube Pete,

Failure due to hooligan driver, giving it large and drifting on gravel hairpin tracks up and down spanish mountains, A 101 is not a WRC car

It did start to give a warning rumble the next day but died on a switch back turn before I could get it back to base camp

Removed front prop and finished the holiday in RWD only,

Les

LOL if that was the only story, :P :P :P :P

1st trip abroad Holland- me broken shoulder 101 no breakages

2nd trip abroad Ardennes- me broken knee 101 no breakages

3rd trip abroad Holland/ Belgium- me broken finger- 101 no breakages,

4th trip abroad Spain - me no breakages 101 broken CV

5th trip abroad Ardennes - me no breakages 101 broken rear prop,

6th trip abroad....next year

I see a pattern forming, maybe I should break something before I go and then the 101 will be fine
