Its gone past my max bid..
I may have to re-think.

Could we not get a copy of the bell housing made with a subtle difference built in, to get past any design patents...ie remove any maker references. That way those who need one could get one at a sensible price.

Providing the winning bidder is a club forum member who agrees to loaning for copying, and a foundry able to recast is found.

We got a genuine new 101 bellhousing, at Eastnor, for £20. If you stick to the real McCoy its cheaper!

Les.

I spoke to Zeus a while ago today. Asking about whether they had any bell housings in stock or planned to reproduce another batch.
If there is enough interest he would make another batch. He said he would need about 20 confirmed orders with 50% of the cost paid in deposit upfront first.
I asked him how much they original were sold for a few years ago and was told almost £300.

Someone is going to contact the club directly to evaluate interest, to see if its viable and cost effective(in Zeus's opinion) for them to be produce again. They did say the last batch were hanging around for a while before they sold, and he does not want that to happen again with another batch..hence the 50% deposit payable at time of order.

He would not say how much they would cost tis time or whether a smaller batch quantity would be produced at a higher price. Though I suspect he would increase the price after seeing the one sold on ebay for £430.

Looks like the bidding war on that item has done nothing than increase the purchase cost of any others produced..so thanks a lot for that, who ever you are.

I'm still thinking of doing the LT77 and LT230 trans implant with the 200tdi, as I have a new gearbox and trans box in storage. Any comments on that gearbox set up in 101's, from those who have already done the swap?.

We won the item because we needed it asap to enable us to mock up our chassis & running gear before sending chassis to be galvanised.

also spoke to zeus before bidding, monday and today, the lady i spoke to was going to get in touch with their foundary to see whether its feasible to make another batch. Was told someone would get back to me in a couple of days time, which was no good, as if the answer was no, then we couldn't progress any further with the build until we had an answer or 10 or 20 other people were ready to buy.

as far as having a bidding war on ebay for it, well isn't that what ebay is for??

A bidding war..not exactly. Chances are, that all the bidders on the item were club forum members, though its just a shame that it went so high..cos like I said in my last post, all thats gonna happen now is Zeus will price them at what the ebay one went for..and thats over £130 more than they were sold for originally. This high pricing will no doubt put off the majority of owners from purchasing and thus the batch won't get made...so we all lose out.

Its a pity the red mist comes up when bidding comences, rather than considering the long term outcome to others..

but then ..I suppose thats never gonna change.

Youre welcome! :P

The whole point of an auction is to sell to the highest bidder, that determines the price.

I looked at the Steve Parker conversion @ £320+vat and decided the Zues bellhousing was worth more - hence my max bid of £425.

Jimjim wanted more and won it. Wheres the problem in that?

The new ones, if they get made, wont be as expensive because supply will meet demand. Its just economics.

I'm thinking of making my own by welding Tdi and LT95 bits together.

Anything is possible, my father used to have a T25 VW camper with a Nissan diesel (a very Irish conversion!) which used a homebrewed conversion plate. It looked like a piece of steel plate, some strip, tubes and studs welded to it, somewhat primitive.

I'm not sure why Zeus would come to the club directly as our policy is only to stock/support the manufacture of original parts and not modifications. There are many other vehicles out there (with clubs) using the LT95, such as the Range-Rover (Many more of them made than the 101) and the Stage 1. All of these are potential markets for Zeus should they decide to go ahead with another production run.

The cost that the adaptor went for would, I imagine, add further weight to the decision as to whether to produce any more and if they do go ahead and overprice them then the customer won't buy!

As for bidding wars etc, well an auction sets the value that someone is prepared to pay, its not first come first served.

Thing is John the 101 bellhousing is unique to the vehicle. Even if you did a run to suit the RRC/Stage 1 and early 110's, it'd still be different to what someone with a 101 wants.

I tend to agree with jimjim and mdh. You put up something for auction and people will push the price up if they want it badly enough. A hard to find item up for auction will attract a higher price than something being sold off as part of a production run.
Hence why you'll pay hundreds of thousands for a 50 year old Aston Martin, yet less than 20 thousand for a brand new Volkswagon.
If Zeus wish to do another run then they'll price it so as they cover the costs of materials, manufacture, and make a margin on each item.
If people don't want to pay the price Zeus will charge for their product then they are under no obligation to order their wares.

Whilst it is unfortunate the price has been artifically inflated via auction, I'm sure the people at Zeus are canny enough to know that thay can't reasonabally expect everyone to pay the final auction price. It would be bad business to think otherwise, and at the end of the day that's what they are. A business out to make money.
