Well, it's not a vampire, but a Radio Body, built by Cammel Laird as a prototype.

The vehicle is obviously not a Vampire and I suspect is the mythical 3rd 68FL44 that had its true identity doctored by a well known west country dealer, to get round US regulations at the time, by supplying it with one of the I/D plates from 68FL44? The only way to tell its true identity is from the chassis number stamping on the front RH spring hanger and if I'm correct it will be 96400431A, which I believe was an Intercept radio body type vehicle that served with 14 Sigs alongside Vampire vehicles, which could explain the confusion with being a Vampire?

If I'm correct it isn't 96100010A, 68FL44, as this vehicle was in Australia and owned by a club member that was a camel dealer and was subsequently obtained by a british club member, who as far as I know still owns it in the UK. When trying to track down the Cammel Laird prototype Signals body vehicle 96400006A, 68FL44, some years in the past, I asked the American owner at that time to check the true chassis number stamped on the RH front spring hanger and it was the number I quoted in my previous post, which according to our records is an Intercept vehicle! Finally 96100010A is the chassis number for a 24V RHD vehicle and this is not a RHD vehicle; I still believe the vehicle is actually 96400431A, 71FL03!

Ex British military 101 vehicles should have two I/D plates mounted on the side of the passenger footwell, the smaller maker's Chassis/VIN plate and the larger Military Contract plate. Both these plates are stamped with the vehicle's chassis number and the ex military VRN should also be stamped on the contract plate. If either of the plates are missing it is best to check the true chassis number stamped on the chassis, as it was common for dealers to change the vehicle identity with either I/D plates for various reasons.

I’ve just purchased this 101. The price kept coming down until I could afford it, so I’m in. Many questions coming!
