I have just purchased a 24 volt RHD 101 chassis number 96100036A which has no data tags fitted and a V5 that is the identity of a 1964 series 2 . Would like to trace the military reg to obtain the B card so i can then prove its real identity to DVLA to obtain a new V5 with an age related plate . Regards Martin

The vehicle's chassis number is stamped on the front outside of the RH spring hanger, above the spring securing bolt head, giving its true identity if the maker's chassis/VIN & Contract plates are missing! If it actually is 96100036A, the ex military VRN would have been 74FL87?

Thank you Les for the reply . The chassis number on the Dumb iron is 96100036A and clear to read after scraping off the waxoil . The chassis number on the V5 has it down as 2411---B and the year of build as 1964 which is clearly a series 2 identity . The registration number is GS U5 83 which matches the series 2 log. It was on milweb (2008) in England for sale and went to Belfast where its been in store .Maybe somebody on here remembers it ?Dvla have said they will issue a correct V5 if I provide them with a copy of the B card . I see you have already spoken to DVLA but my advice would have been, whatever you do do not be in a hurry to contact DVLA. Vehicles with dubious identity have been scrapped on the orders of DVLA. You would be better to find Chassis number, and then apply for a first registration based on that. IE it has been barn stored since release from the Army and you are the first person to register it! Improbable maybe, but the last thing you want to do is make DVLA aware of a ringer at this early stage. you could see the 101 go into the crusher.... Either that or you bought it without a V5, it had no plates on it, and you do not know whether it has been previously registered.

The DVLA will probably want to inspect the vehicle to check the chassis stamping. You can obtain a pdf copy of the B card for 74FL87 from www.rlcarchive.org using your credit card to pay their £35-00 fee and the DVLA will use the DIS to issue the new VRN.

However, according to my records the vehicle was manufactured 16/12/75 and was dispatched to Hilton Vehicle Depot 19/1/76 and received a DIS of JAN 76 there. Therefore if you wish to have a correct 1975 VRN you will also need to supply a dating letter to the DVLA as proof of manufacture.

Finally, when you obtain the 74FL87 B card can you please also send a copy to me, enabling me to enter the information in the club's vehicle register & archive. I can then supply a dating letter and history precis, so you understand the information for your records.

A friend of mine bought a 101 which had a similar problem, made worse by having the number on the dumb iron removed. He eventually sold the vehicle but was going down the route of DVLA giving it an entirely new chassis number and Q plate. No mention of crushing. This was only a couple of years ago.

Hi Les , Above is my B card for 74 FL 87 . Can you help me with it and explain some of the codes ? The modification at 18 command w/s is one i would be interested in . It also suggest a conversion in 1977 again at 18 command w/s . It appears to have been struck off in 1984 ? were 101s struck off this early ? I was in the military then and do not remember them going that early . Interesting that it makes no mention of Disposal ! This is the first B card i have seen that does not list the Disposal . If it did come out in 1984 then i wonder were its been for the last 33 years other than 10 years in store in Ireland . Cheers Martin

12 Light Air Defence Regt RA were based at Dortmund as were 16 Ad Regt in the 1970's and 80's

some details in the letter I had from the RLC museum

Many thanks for the replies Robin . I am still not sure about the struck off date the hand writing reads more like 1984 than 2004 although as stated before that would be very early, It went to Ireland in 2008 as a friend emailed me the internet pictures from that year when it was for sale on milweb located in England . It was on the 1964 plates and identity in 2008 so when i apply for a new v5 with the correct chassis number it will be interesting to see if it ever had one or this will be a first registration.

I'm a bit puzzled by your card as it doesn't follow the norm for a Rapier FUT? It doesn't help that the clerk's handwriting isn't very good and the cards don't give much information, especially with the vehicle's actual use and weaponry.

However the card gives the vehicle was built as a gloss Bronze green 24v RHD Winched GS, with 1832 0750 Asset Code & EIN RU571, under contract WV9615 and delivered to Hilton in January 1976, with a Jan 1976 DIS & ADPCON computer entry as normal. It then was issued to British Aerospace, Stevenage, at the end of March, presumably for weapony fitment and then to for 18 Command Workshop, Bovington for modification in April 1976, presumably for the weapony? Then in May it was issued to 22 Light Air Defence Regt RA, followed by 14 Battery 16 Light Air Defence Regt RA in March 1977, presumably providing air defence with the weapon system provided by BAC, which type we don't know?

The vehicle was then converted to a Rapier FUT, with Asset Code change to 1833 0750, by or under cotrol of 18 Command Workshop in August 1977, but strangely the EIN isn't changed as it should have. Also, strangely, the vehicle was re-entered on the ADPCON computer 30 September 1977? It was then issued to 16Air Defence Regt RA in April 1978 and 12 Air Defence Regt RA in May 1981 providing air defence with the Rapier system until being Struck Off by 12 Air Defence Regt 8/5/1984, If I read it correctly? This is also the date listed in our database.

Finally the Unit Identity Number (UIN) A0209A given on the card, as the last unit to which it was issued is actually the code for the 12 Air Defence Regiment RA!

Unfortunately the card doesn't tell us why it was Struck Off so early but with the 101's its relatively common, with vehicles being cannibalised & broken for spares, etc. It may be sensible to apply for a Merlin MMI printout from the MOD for more information, but as it appears to have been S/O in 1984 they probably will not have a MMI, even though the vehicle was entered twice?

Hi Les , Many thanks for the reply and additional information . I did an FOI request and as you suggested they had no computer details on this vehicle so likely to have been struck off in 1984. This is the first B card i have seen that does not actually have the disposal details on it . Do you have a approx date and location of the picture you posted of it . I have only seen pictures of it in plain nato green taken around 2006/2007. Regards Martin
